Central forces were deployed outside the Kalighat residence of Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Saturday after BJP workers and supporters gathered there and raised “Jai Shri Ram” slogans following the swearing-in of Suvendu Adhikari as the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal. The deployment was carried out to maintain law and order and prevent any escalation of tension in the area.
According to local sources, shortly after the oath-taking ceremony of the BJP government at Brigade Parade Ground, a group of BJP supporters arrived outside Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat as part of a bike rally. Supporters were seen raising slogans, while some allegedly continued slogan-shouting directly in front of the entrance gate of the residence.
Police personnel already deployed at the location initially attempted to disperse the gathering. Following the incident, additional security arrangements were made and central force personnel were stationed outside the residence to control the situation and restrict supporters from moving closer to the property.
Officials stated that the situation later came under control and no further disturbance was reported from the area. Central force personnel continued guarding the location and prevented rally participants and supporters from assembling near the residence of the former Chief Minister.
After the Assembly election results, barricades outside Mamata Banerjee’s residence had been removed and security arrangements were reduced. However, security cover entitled to her as a former Chief Minister remained in place. Security deployment outside the residence of Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee had also reportedly been scaled down earlier.
